DULUTH YACHT CLUB NOTICE OF RACE
--2011 Duluth Triangle Pursuit Race--
Event Date: Saturday, August 13, 2011
Description of Race:
The Duluth Triangle is a pursuit race in which start times are calculated
based on PHRF (time-on-distance) ratings and the length of the course. Boats with relatively
higher PHRF ratings start earlier and are "pursued" by boats having relatively lower PHRF
ratings. Based on an approximate course length of 68 miles, each 3 seconds difference in
PHRF ratings equates to a 3 minute, 24 second start time difference.

Rules:
The race will be governed by the 2009-2012 US Sailing Association Racing Rules of
Sailing (RRS) except as any of these are altered by the Duluth Triangle Sailing Instructions.
Eligibility: All boats with a 2011 PHRF rating from DYC or other Lake Superior Yacht
Association-affiliated yacht club are eligible for this race.
Skipper meeting: The skippers meeting will be held at the Duluth Yacht Club clubhouse, just
inside the entrance to Harbor Cove Marina, at the base of 11th Avenue South, at 09:00 on
Saturday August 13, 2011.

Start Times:

The start time for the boat with the highest PHRF rating will be 10:15 on
Saturday August 13, 2011. Start times for all other boats will be posted online
( http://duluthyachtclub.com/ ), on the sliding glass door of the DYC club house (the Notice
Board), and will also be listed in abbreviated Sailing Instructions that will be handed out at
the skippers meeting.
Jib and Main: Boats sailing under jib and main will be afforded a 15 sec/mile
rating adjustment. This adjustment will rely on an honor system, and skippers
taking this adjustment can determine their start time from the PHRF rating start
list.

Course:
The start and finish will be within 300 yards of the entrance of the Duluth Ship
Canal. The course will be sailed counter-clockwise from the start, to a location
approximately 300 yards north of the piers at Port Wing, Wisconsin, then to a location
approximately 300 yards south east of the west break wall at Two Harbors, Minnesota, and
then to the finish. An attempt will be made to place marks at these turning locations.
Marks of the course: An attempt will be made to place marks at these turning locations.
More specific mark locations (lat/lon) and descriptions, including the start/finish line, will be
provided online, at the Skippers Meeting, and will be posted on the Notice Board.
Safety: The safety of boat and crew are the responsibility of skippers. However, the race
organizers recommend that safety harnesses be used after dark, that boats are in full
compliance with government regulations that apply in the racing area and with Offshore
Racing Council's Category IV requirements
